
A two-year bridge management support service covering 1,327 bridges and 11,931 culverts across Alemgena, Soddo, Nekempt, and Jimma road networks in Ethiopia.
Scope
The project provides comprehensive consultancy for carrying out Bridge Management Support Services under four major regional Road Network Management Directorates in Ethiopia, covering a network length of 12,353 km containing 1,327 bridges and 11,931 culverts.
Approach
Condition Surveys
Conducted major and regular structural inventory inspections across all four road networks to identify defects and changes in design and quantities.
Engineering Methodology
Developed a custom method for determining the residual bearing capacity of existing bridges to prioritize asset management tasks.
Database & Software Upgrades
Upgraded the existing BMS software to version 6.1, integrating it with a web-based, GIS-enabled relational database and upgrading the bridge construction cost estimation software.
Outcome
Master Planning
Revised and developed a new 5-year Bridge Improvement Master Plan for the Ethiopian Roads Authority’s Road Asset Management Directorate.
Mobile Capability
Developed a dedicated Android application to streamline site data collection for bridge inspectors.
Capacity Building
Trained regional directorate personnel in bridge inspection, asset management, and structural repair works.
